Third time’s the charm?

(first test sketch)

After the first one mysteriously cracked, the second one was just... off. Right-click/hold and multitouch weren’t working in certain apps (especially photoshop, which is like the reason I use the tablet). The screen was slightly misaligned. So I took it to a Mcrosoft store to see if I could sort it out without spending any more money. I hadn’t had it long enough to really use it a lot, yet, and when the MS tech guy opened up the stand to grab the serial number, THIS IS WHAT I SEE:

Kinja'd!!!

Do not adjust your screens. That’s actually what it looked like. Double-printed. Fucked up. I don’t know how MS quality control/assurance people are getting these things into the hands of Amazon retailers, but I decided right then that, fuck this, it’s going right back. I expect a 100% refund. Haven’t gone so far as to call out the seller as fraudulent, but I’m not sure how else I’d characterize it. So I walked out of the MS store with Surface 3 #3.

So far, so good.

Lesson(s) learned: if you want a Surface, buy it straight from Microsoft. It may cost a hundred bucks more, but your ass will be covered when something’s not right. Worth the peace of mind.

Fool me once, shame on... shame on you. Foolmuh can’t get fooled again.

I’ll be in the market for a Surface or Surface Pro 4 when it comes out in a few months. Thanks for the heads up.

Any issues running a 2560x1440 external monitor?

Those Chinese are getting sloppy. Foxconn must not be using their electrical whips quite as often they used to.

Man, if they really do a 14” Surface 4... I’m gonna regret this whole S3 thing all the way to the bank.

I haven’t tried running an external monitor, my monitors are all dual-DVI.

That was far from this one’s only issue. I can only suspect that someone(s)‘s sneaking rejects out and handing them off to non-MS sellers.

How good is the digitizer? I will start my digital sketching courses soon for ID and I really want a cyntiq, but the Surface seems way more portable

It’s almost as good as Wacom’s. Really little discernible difference from Wacom tablets I’ve used. Wacom’s Companion or whatever tablets are stupid expensive, thick, and heavy. Pressure sensitivity is fine. The big drawback is that the stylus is a piece of shit, especially the tips. If you buy one, make sure there’s a Microsoft store near enough to go a get new tips, because they don’t sell them separately. My first one was worn out after less than a month of light use. I got an HTC stylus to try out, and it works ok, but the pressure sensitivity isn’t as good and the tip’s REALLY hard. Fine for a backup, but not for everyday.

And here I am still rocking an Intuos3 :) I’m curious as to how you (as in you ) use the Surface, whether flat down on the table or propped up? My old place of work had the Cintiqs and I just couldn’t get used to putting in freehand motions onto a device propped up on a table. My elbow needs to be grounded somewhere and it just felt unnatural!

Also, are you studying automotive design, or have you graduated?

I still use my 12-year-old Intuos 2 at home on my desktop+big screen, and I bought the surface to replace my 8-year-old Motion tablet :)

I’ve used it propped on low a little, but I’m usually working standing up, and I just keep it flat on the table when I’m drawing. I haven’t used Cintiqs very much, but the angle is something that’d always bugged me, too. Something about the parallax always seemed off.

I graduated CCS ID/Trans in ‘03.

It looks like a good school (forgive me, I’m in the UK), are you in industry now or a hobbyist? I graduated in ‘10 from Northumbria Uni Transportation Design, sat within the industry for a bit before becoming quite disheartened and walking away. I haven’t drawn another car since. Your work surpasses anything I ever created, and seeing your posts sparks something in me, I would love to start drawing cars again but most of my time is now spend drawing gardens instead. Funny how things work out.

Yeah, CCS is very different now than when I was there (there are a couple other students and grads around here), but it’s still right up there with Art Center in the US as the top school. I’ve been designing mostly non-car things for my career (funny how life works out), but I still post sketches here from time to time.

On a very related tangent (its related, I swear!) - I feel that instead of quoting Plato or Confucious, we should quote people that more relevant today. For example:

Fool me one time, shame on you.

Fool me twice can put the blame you.

Fool me three times, fuck the peace sign; load the chopper let it rain on you.

- J Cole, circa 2015.
